Round 19

Our last round before lunch and there is a lot of excitement in the air.

Kevin Leeds (Atlanta, TX) brings his result slip up and says, "I finally won a game!" I see three bingos from the game: SOMITIC for 87, STEaRIC for 86, and CARMINES, played through the I. He challenged off PUDGE*, attempted by his opponent, KC Frodyma (Silver Spring, MD). His win, 439-332.

Thomas Conrad (Rio Rancho, NM) makes me smile. He approaches, tosses out the hook--wanna see how challenging off three phoney bingos played by Joel Sherman (Bronx, NY) wins you a game? And, I'm so all ears for the next several minutes. Joel first tried PECTATED*, then SECTATED*, and finally TOOLLIkE*. Tom played STERNWAY through the E for 74 and MEGARON for 75. Joel did get down SANSERIF for 88 and REVISION for 65. Tom's win, 430-364.

Ian Weinstein (Coral Springs, FL) vs. Rod MacNeil (Cambridge, MA). GOODWIFE from the G and ETYMONS are Ian's better plays. Rod challenged the second bingo and lost his turn, then ian played UPTURN, which provided an opening for Rod to get down JEUX through the U from the triple for 78. Rod also played RELOADER through the D, double-double, and TINGLIer. Rod's win, 465-362.

After taking a lunchtime shot of Conrad Bassett-Bouchard (Moraga, CA), Joey Krafchick (Roswell, GA), and Rebecca Lambert (Columbia, MD), Conrad said, "Did you know that LAMBERT takes a front hook? FOOT! So FOOTLAMBERT is good.

Brian Cappelletto (Chicago, IL) meets me in the hallway. He tells me he is 11-7-1 and he sarcastically mentions that this record ought to be of tremendous interest to everyone reading the DO's web site.

Jason Katz-Brown (Cambridge, MA) wants me to photograph him and John Fultz (Savoy, IL). Beaming, Jason said, "This man is the only reason Quackle runs in Windows!" Being a mac person, I pretended to give John a polite golf clap and condescendingly offered that to some people this might be of some use. :)

Outside the Conference Center, underneath a thatch of trees, was a meeting of the sore losers of DO support group. With mock determination, Stefan Rau (Newington, CT) said, "Division 3 in Orland better watch the f*@$ out!" Everyone laughed and understood the sentiment.

In a Darrell Day (Richardson, TX) vs. Michael Early (Fort Worth, TX) game this round Mike got down cURACAO and FLAVONES.
