Round 11 Before table 3's game began this round, Jason Katz-Brown (Cambridge, MA) was standing and stretching out his arms over his head while doing what looked to be neck rolls. Not to be outdone, his opponent, Joel Sherman (Bronx, NY), stood, extended his straight arm out a bit over his shoulders and kicked each of his legs up, one at time, to meet his outstretched hands. It was a remarkably limber feat and one that caught John's and my attention. David Gibson (Spartanburg, SC) defeated Orry Swift (Dayton, TX) this round, 500-377. see Orry's CARITAS for 89 and David's SWEATILY for 68, BRACiNGS through the N for 76, and LUNATION to the last N for 71. Top-ranked Mike Baron (Corrales, NM) defeated fourth-place Amit Chakrabarti (Hanover, NH) to stay at the top of the rankings; Amit managed to climb to third place with his relatively close 349-403 loss. Not so close was the game between third-place Jason Katz-Brown (Cambridge, MA) and Joel Sherman (Bronx, NY), where a 518-302 blowout was enough to push Jason up to second place. The closest game of the round was Thomas Conrad's (Rio Rancho, NM) 389-387 victory over John Luebkemann (Bear, DE). T A Sanders (San Antonio, TX) has currently gained the most ratings. If the tournament were to end now, Sanders would be up an impressive 127 points to an even 1300. Diane Firstman (Brooklyn, NY) is in the lead for the Most Incredibly Average Record prize, at 5.5-5.5 +162, just 29 spread points ahead of Paul Mulik (Joplin, MO). Ironically, Diane is the donor of that prize, whose winner will earn Diane's Defalt book. Bottom seed Marie Irvine (Augton, UT) scored a stunning upset and will almost certainly take home one of the SamBoards to be awarded for the two players who defeat opponents rated the highest above them. Marie beat Andy Bohnsack (Madison, WI), rated 992 points above her, 359-294. |
