Round 7 Laura Landsbaum (The Woodlands, TX; 1103) walks over to the Internet table and casually asks if I want to see her nice X play. She explains that the game wasn't much to look at, but that she was really proud of that find. We walk over to find Ken Castner (Homer, AK; 0) filling out paperwork, looking a bit glum. Sure enough, she had a very nice triple-triple that Ken is quick to mention he helped her get down. His "help" was the play of ACEY to the triple lane, one short of the top triple word square. Laura replied with SYNTAxES for 159 points, helping to sew up her 491-244 run. Alyssa Faria (Washington, DC; 1669) and Chris Lipe (Rome, NY; 1717) must have had good games this round. They stood in the middle of the room by the word judge machine and did a series of calisthentic high fives that had them twirling and smacking all over. It looked like fun and certainly was more energizing than what most do between games! I see an empty board, no paperwork, no players. CHInBONES jumps out as a fun find. Steve Pellinen (St. Louis Park, MN; 1693) played Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON; 1856) this round. As far as I can glean, it was all Steve all the time. I see his TImELINE for 57, FARRIErS for 72, and the fun XERUS hooking the S to make ZOONS for 46. Robin walks up and says she's gone 7 games without an X. In this game, she played RANCHES for 71 and made the play of TALLIT, later extending it to TALLITH, which was pretty. Orry Swift (Dayton, TX; 1806) faced off against Darrell Day (Richardson, TX; 1773) this round at the elevated, annotated table 1. Both players had a couple of bingos each, Orry's ABEYANT for 68 and RELIAnT for 84 and Darrell's ITERANCE for 72 and AVIATeS for 72. Both players scored into the 400s, but it was Darrell's win, 462-405. This round, Jason Katz-Brown (Cambridge, MA; 1922) played the 93rd seeded player, Nancy Scott (Schertz, TX; 1240) and he says she nearly beat him. John OLaughlin (Sun Prairie, WI; 1882) had a fun bingo this round in his game against Nathan Benedict (Tucson, AZ; 1850). John opened with WADDIeD and later got down JAUNTIER through the U and COvARIES played to the S. It was John's win, 473-324. He is still down only one game, 6-1. John Chew says, "Brian Cappelletto (Chicago, IL; 1974) extends his career record at Dallas to 21-0. It's pretty clear why he comes to this event; he comes here for the ratings points! His estimated rating is up 10 points since the start of this year's event. Next round, he faces Darrell Day (Richardson, TX; 1773), who is the only other player left undefeated." A matchup for the record books! |
